Semester 2 BC Principal’s Letter to Parents

Dear Maple Leaf High School Parents,                                                                       June 15th, 2016

Semester Two has been both a successful and busy time at Maple Leaf International School Chongqing (MLIS-C). We hosted our very first Maple Leaf-wide boys’ and girls’ high school soccer tournament last month, with teams from Dalian, Wuhan and Tianjin attending, and our MLIS-C girls’ team won first place! We also held our first TED-X Event, where school founder Dr. Sherman Jen was the key note speaker, as well as other speeches by a MLIS-C student, BC teacher and alumni student. MLIS-C also sent a Model United Nations team to Maple Leaf International School Dalian, and a business team to the ASDAN Conference in Beijing. Our school badminton team traveled to Maple Leaf International School Wuhan, and several of our students won medals, and coaches sent me feedback on the great sportsmanship the MLIS-C team showed during the tournament. There was also a spring science fair where students showed off creative projects. The BC high school program also held a number of events during the English Language Arts Festival (ELAF), which culminated in an entertaining ELAF gala. And this year’s school musical production ‘Tarzan’ performed 3 enjoyable shows.  There were also several field trips to several venues around the Chongqing community.

The MLIS-C grade 12’s have been very busy as well, having just wrote their English 12 and Communications 12 BC provincial exams last month. They also recently had their Graduation Gala performance, Graduation Ceremony, as well as Prom. By June 9th, The graduating class of 2016 has received lots of good news, as 304 conditional offers and 632,000RMB in scholarships have been made to our grade 12 students from many of the world’s top universities and colleges; 125 of which are ranked in the top 100 for Maple Leaf students, including one student accepted into a top 10 university for the first time in MLIS-C’s history. Our school is very proud of the achievements this year’s graduates have made.

The MLIS-C British Columbia (BC) program just completed a one week AdvancED External Review inspection.  AdvancED is the world’s largest school accreditation organization, providing continuous improvement and accreditation services to over 32,000 schools serving 20,000,000 students worldwide. The AdvancED External Review inspection team focused on the impact of teaching and learning, the capacity of leadership, and the use of resources. The AdvancED team interviewed 42 students, 17 BC teachers, 12 parents, the Headmaster, BC Principal and BC Vice Principal, support staff, and current BC Superintendent Jim Beeke and future BC Superintendent Bob Gardner. I am happy to announce that not only did MLIS-C get awarded AdvancED accreditation, we scored higher than the AdvancED global average (32,000 schools) in EVERY category. I am also proud to announce that MLIS-C received the highest AdvancED score of all the 7 Maple Leaf high schools that had an AdvancED inspection. MLIS-C is now officially certified by both the British Columbia Ministry of Education and AdvancED. I want to thank all of the parents who completed the AdvancED surveys over the New Year’s holiday in February, and the parents who came into the school for an interview last week during the inspection. Parent involvement was very important to our success this year.

One of our main goals this year has been to improve the communication between the Chinese and Canadian administrators, teachers, staff, students and parents. It was great to see so many parents at the Course Selection Fair, Open House events, TED-X, and Grade Level Parent meetings this semester. I also had a chance to meet with the Parents Committee, which I found very informative. AdvancED’s main goal is to help schools do continuous improvement, and I believe MLIS-C has taken giant strides this year to improve the communication, facilities, safety and learning environment. Feedback from parents is very important to us, and I welcome parents to come in and meet with me, BC Vice Principal Karamati, Chinese leadership, the school counselors and teachers. I am confident that we will continue to work together to improve the school for our students next year. Last year, there was a lot of turnover with teachers and administrators. But I’m happy to announce that we have over 80% of the BC teaching staff and both BC administrators returning next year, which will allow us to keep building on the momentum of our school improvement initiatives. For example, we have just signed a new agreement with Maple Leaf Head Office to build a 3D printing lab at MLIS-C for the 2016-2017 school year, which is an exciting new technology for our students and staff to use next year.

On behalf of the MLIS-C staff, I want to thank the parents for your support this year, and I want to wish you and your family a happy summer holiday. And to the parents of this year’s graduates, I hope your son/daughter has great success at the post-secondary level next year, and they remember their time at MLIS-C fondly.

Yours in service,
